The Taplin-Weir Clarinet Bore Gauge was created to provide accurate readings of clarinet bore dimensions. It can be used to determine the mouthpiece bore at the tenon end, the top barrel bore, the bottom barrel bore, the top upper joint bore, the bottom upper joint bore, and the top lower joint bore. The gauge is calibrated in .005 increments and the lines on the plunger rod further refine the measurement by providing a Vernier scale of five .001 increments (e.g. .585 + 2 lines is .587).
The gauge is useful in a variety of ways and can be used to:
- confirm and compare clarinet dimensions
- confirm mouthpiece bore consistency
- assess barrel tapers
- check for shrinkage of the wood relative to known dimensions of a specific barrel or instrument
